Invasive plant management

Steps towards (more) successful management of invasive species

The planning and implementation of a management program of invaded areas is often a lengthy and costly process. However, any delay in carrying out a management plan will aggravate the situation and potentially lead to a rising cost whether for its implementation or mitigation of the subsequent damages that are caused.

Therefore, prevention is better than a cure; i.e., the emphasis should be on prevention strategies; early detection and rapid response to impede the establishment of new species. Where large invaded areas exist, it is fundamental to establish priorities (in respect to the species and the areas), select the control methods most appropriate for the species and apply them correctly, without neglecting the three sequential stages of control (initial control, continuity and maintenance). Finally, don’t forget to  monitor and evaluate the results.
