The species seriously damage China’s agriculture, international trade, ecology, animals and people, said Zhou Changyong, vice president of the Chongqing-based Southwest University. Thirteen of the species which have invaded farms and forests cause direct economic losses of 57 billion yuan (US$9.4 billion) every year.

Novas estratégias de combate a invasoras precisam-se

New strategies needed for control of weeds and pests

Dubbing pesticide-resistant chickweed as “the Scottish curse”, he noted that two mutations of the weed had been identified — the most common being resistant to sulfonurea weedkillers.

“The problem with resistance is the harder you look, the more you find,” Mr Cussans added.

Poppies, attractive as they are in small numbers, were also proving hard to control in some cases.
