Spikelet

Typical inflorescence of the sedge family (Cyperaceae) and grass family (Poaceae ); in the latter, it is constituted by 2 (in lesser amounts 1 or 3) sterile bracts (chaffs) on the base, an axis (rachilla) with a variable number of nodes with a flower inserted in each one; the flowers are generally surrounded by 2 bracts (inferior glume = lemma and superior glume = palea).
